Robert was born in 1655 in Cranbrook, Kent.  Robert's father was John DENCE and his mother was Ellen BEXLIE.  His paternal grandparents were John DENCE and Joane SMYTHE; his maternal grandfather was John BEXLIE. He had a brother and a sister, named John and Hellen.  He was the youngest of the three children.
