John was born in 1654 in Cranbrook, Kent.  John's father was John DENCE and his mother was Ellen BEXLIE.  His paternal grandparents were John DENCE and Joane SMYTHE; his maternal grandfather was John BEXLIE. He had a brother and a sister, named Robert and Hellen.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
