Emily was born in 1859 in Stanton Harcourt, Oxfordshire.  Emily's father was George BURDEN and her mother was Hannah WHITE.  Her maternal grandparents were Joseph WHITE and Alice GARDNER. She had five brothers and five sisters, named George, Henry, Walter, Arthur, Frank, Elizabeth, Hannah Maria, Agnes, Phillis and Rose Ellen.  She was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.
