William Olphin was born in 1846 in Stamford, Lincolnshire.  William Olphin's father was James Martin and his mother was Ann Durance.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Martin and Frances Coulson; his maternal grandparents were William Durance and Sarah Olphin. He had seven brothers and six sisters, named John, Henry, Henry, Henry, Henry, James, Thomas, Sarah, Jane, Fanny, Mary Ann, Emily Durance and Emmia.  He was the seventh oldest of the fourteen children.
