Sarah was born in 1837 in Easton, Northamptonshire.  Sarah's father was James Martin and her mother was Ann Durance.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Martin and Frances Coulson; her maternal grandparents were William Durance and Sarah Olphin. She had eight brothers and five sisters, named John, Henry, William Olphin, Henry, Henry, Henry, James, Thomas, Jane, Fanny, Mary Ann, Emily Durance and Emmia.  She was the second oldest of the fourteen children.
