Mary Ann was born in 1844 in Stamford, Lincolnshire.  Mary Ann's father was James Martin and her mother was Ann Durance.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Martin and Frances Coulson; her maternal grandparents were William Durance and Sarah Olphin. She had eight brothers and five sisters, named John, Henry, William Olphin, Henry, Henry, Henry, James, Thomas, Sarah, Jane, Fanny, Emily Durance and Emmia.  She was the fifth oldest of the fourteen children.
