Emmia was born in 1854 in Stamford, Lincolnshire.  Emmia's father was James Martin and her mother was Ann Durance.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Martin and Frances Coulson; her maternal grandparents were William Durance and Sarah Olphin. She had eight brothers and five sisters, named John, Henry, William Olphin, Henry, Henry, Henry, James, Thomas, Sarah, Jane, Fanny, Mary Ann and Emily Durance.  She was the eleventh oldest of the fourteen children.
