Henry was born in 1844 in Stamford, Lincolnshire.  Henry's father was James Martin and his mother was Ann Durance.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Martin and Frances Coulson; his maternal grandparents were William Durance and Sarah Olphin. He had seven brothers and six sisters, named John, William Olphin, Henry, Henry, Henry, James, Thomas, Sarah, Jane, Fanny, Mary Ann, Emily Durance and Emmia.  He was the sixth oldest of the fourteen children.
