Margaret was born in 1861 in Aldbrough, Yorkshire.  Margaret's father was Joseph Kipling and her mother was Elizabeth Gregory.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Kipling and Ann Mattrass. She had a brother and four sisters, named John T, Mary, Elizabeth, Anne and Jane.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
