Anne was born in 1859 in Shildon, Durham.  Anne's father was Joseph Kipling and her mother was Elizabeth Gregory.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Kipling and Ann Mattrass. She had a brother and four sisters, named John T, Mary, Elizabeth, Margaret and Jane.  She was the second oldest of the six children.
