John T was born in 1871 in Cornsay, Durham.  John T's father was Joseph Kipling and his mother was Elizabeth Gregory.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Kipling and Ann Mattrass. He had five sisters named Jane, Anne, Margaret, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the youngest of the six children.
