Joseph A was born in 1849 in Morton Banks, Yorkshire, England.1   Joseph A's father was William Thornton and his mother was Mary (Thornton).  His paternal grandparents were Unknown Thornton and Mary (Thornton).  He had two brothers and five sisters, named Charles, William, Margaret Ann, Sarah, Grace, Elizabeth J and Alice.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
