Herbert was born in March 1888 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England.  Herbert's father was Peter Thornton and his mother was Kate.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Thornton and Mary Ann Fortune; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Newiss and Ann Hartley.  He had two brothers and four sisters, named Charlie, Edward, Annie Elizabeth, Ella, Ethel and Doris.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 25 in December 1913 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England.
