William Petty

William was born in 1828 in Hensall, Yorkshire, England.¹ William's father was John Petty and his mother was Elizabeth Hirst. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Pettyt and Anne (Nancy) Benson. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John William, Henry, George, James, Elizabeth Phoebe, Elizabeth, Mary Ann and Eleanor. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
