William was born on February 2nd, 1776 in Catchaburn and his baptism took place on February 11th, 1776 in Muirkirk.  William's father was Thomas Lees and his mother was Elizabeth Pedine. He had three brothers and three sisters, named David, John, Andrew, Elizabeth, Mary and Janet.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.
