John was born about 1765 and his baptism took place on February 14th, 1765 in Muirkirk.  John's father was Thomas Lees and his mother was Elizabeth Pedine. He had three brothers and three sisters, named David, Andrew, William, Elizabeth, Mary and Janet.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
