Mary was born on March 4th, 1853 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire.  Mary's father was Alexander Linklater and her mother was Mary Campbell.  Her paternal grandparents were John Linkleter and Elizabeth Murray; her maternal grandparents are William Campbell and <Unknown>.  She had two sisters named Barbara and Elizabeth.  She was the youngest of the three children.
