Barbara was born on September 18th, 1849 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire.  Barbara's father was Alexander Linklater and her mother was Mary Campbell.  Her paternal grandparents were John Linkleter and Elizabeth Murray; her maternal grandparents are William Campbell and <Unknown>.  She had two sisters named Elizabeth and Mary.  She was the oldest of the three children.
