John was born on May 13th, 1708 in , Northamptonshire, , England.  John's father was Charles Spencer, Earl of Sunderland and his mother was Anne Churchill of Marlborough.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Spencer, Earl of Sunderland and Anne Digby of Bristol. He had two brothers named Robert and Charles. He had three half-sisters named Francis, Anne and Diana.  He died at the age of 38 in 1746 in Wimbledon, Surrey, , England.
