Robert was born in 1701.  Robert's father was Charles Spencer, Earl of Sunderland and his mother was Anne Churchill of Marlborough.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Spencer, Earl of Sunderland and Anne Digby of Bristol. He had two brothers named Charles and John. He had three half-sisters named Francis, Anne and Diana.  He died at the age of 28 in 1729.
