Gertje was born on March 25th, 1822 in Dokkum.  Gertje's father was Lieuwe Roelofs Rosema and her mother was Sytske Hedzers Kooistra. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Hedzer, Hedzer, Melle, Froukje, Janke and Wytske.  She was the youngest of the seven children. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Roelof, Sipke and Tetje.  She died at the age of 70 on January 24th, 1893.
