  • Was one of the first settlers in New Gloucester,  Maine, removing there from North Yarmouth.  Mention is made of him that he cam to the block house of garrison with his wife, Sarah Scriggins, and there remained until a log house was  built on the top of Harris Hill, where he made his home.  Tradition shows him to be a great hunter and scout.  He saw much service in the French and Indian Wars from 1755 to 1760.  (He is listed in several muster rolls).  There is a well established tradition that he was commissioned captain in the continental army and died at Ticonderoga during the Revolution.
    
    No public records have been found in support of this tradition but no other record of his death can be found and the tradition appears in all the lines of his descendants there seems to be no reason to doubt its accuracy. It is further documented in the book "Old Foxcroft Maine : Traditions and Memories, With Family Histories"
    
    Land grant at Kittery, land located at Puden Hole. 
    
    His name appears on a muster roll, dated Boston, July 5, 1755, of a company in His Majesty's service, under command of Capt. Joseph Ingersoll; rank, Sentinel:  Entered service May 6, served until June 11, 1755.  Length of service five weeks, two days.  (Mass.  Arch. Muster Rolls, Vol. 93, p. 170.)
    
       His name again appears on a Muster Roll, dated Falmouth, Nov. 26, 1755, of a company of a company in His Majesty's service under command of Capt. George Berry (see same person on this GED file.)  Rank, Sentinel.  Residence, North Yarmouth.  Entered the service July 17, served until Nov. 19, 1755.  Length of service, eighteen weeks.  Endorsed, company in Eastern Frontier from June 20, to Nov 20th, 1755 (Mass. Arch. Muster Rolls, Vol. 94, page 15)
