Captain Roger Hilton

  •    Captain Roger Hilton was born between 1550 and 1560 in Biddick, Durham, England. And, while many genealogies mentioned Yorkshire, or Northwich, Cheshire, as his birthplace, it would seem logical that he was born in Biddick, Durham since his father was Lord Biddick of Hylton Castle. He was the son of William Hilton of Biddick and Margaret Metcalfe. Captain Roger Hilton married Ellen Mainwarring, daughter of John Mainwarring, circa 1585 in Wearmouth, Durham, England,, with no firm citations for this wife/marriage, but her name has appeared on numerous genealogy databases. The marriage date is based upon the estimated birthdate of Roger and 1590s birthdates of his sons. Captain Roger Hilton died in 1604/5 in Wearmouth, Durham, England.
    
    Roger is included in the published family pedigree (see Surtees' "History of Durham"), as well as mentioned in his mother's Will of 1566.1
    
    While I have found Roger being referred to in many genealogy databases as "Mark" Roger Hilton, since there have never been any accompanying sources cited, I will refer to him as only "Roger."
    
    Roger, being the fourth son, had to set out to earn his own living. He became a London merchant where he was been shown to be living in 1590.2
