In 1444, Edmund Duke of Somerset in the name of Edmund March, Dorset, Rowland Tempest, and William Herd about a charter at Carneby 22 April, 23 Henry VI (1444) gives Robert Hilton, Knight in the name of Robert Hilton, Knight, Baron of Hilton and Elizabeth his wife, former wife of Thomas Holden, holding the manor of Carneby, having the inheritance and assignations of Robert. William Hilton is the son and heir, aged 30.3

Manor of Hilton: Has a court, 4 vaulted chambers, a chapel, a kitchen, a room built of stone called the Gatehouse; 20 fields making 20 acres, each acre valued at 6 pence; an enclosure called the Orchard value 6s 8d; 20 tofts value 6d; 26 acres meadow value 2s; a toft and 10 acres of land called Sandsonland, the acreage valued 2s 4d and the toft 12s; 100 acres valued 6d; a messuage and 20 acres arable called Chaumberland, the messuage valued 12d and the acres 11d; 168 acres moor, each acre valued 2d. The manor holds one knights fee except a tenth part.
Manor of Newton: Totally laid waste. 200 acres arable valued at 4d, a number of tofts each valued 20d, a tenth acre woodland value 7d; 30 acres pasture value 4d; 90 acres moor; held from the Bishop for one knights fee.
