Mary was born on November 5th, 1871 in New Street Chatham Kent.1   Mary's father was James Walker (b Old Brompton -Stableman Gas Worker bur E 882) and her mother was Sarah Piper (b Chatham bur StMaryMag Eham).  Her paternal grandparents were James Walker (Cowkeeper-Carman - Stableman) and Harriett Light; her maternal grandparents were Charles Piper (Blacksmith b Maidstone Kent) and Mary Ann Savin (b Ramsgate Kent). She had two brothers and three sisters, named William, James, Hannah, Eliza and Nellie or Ellen.  She was the oldest of the six known children. She had two half-brothers named Joseph and James.
