William was born on March 11th, 1880 in Lucas Cottages East Ham.¹ William's father was James Walker (b Old Brompton -Stableman Gas Worker bur E 882) and his mother was Sarah Piper (b Chatham bur StMaryMag Eham). His paternal grandparents were James Walker (Cowkeeper-Carman - Stableman) and Harriett Light; his maternal grandparents were Charles Piper (Blacksmith b Maidstone Kent) and Mary Ann Savin (b Ramsgate Kent). He had a brother and four sisters, named James, Mary, Hannah, Eliza and Nellie or Ellen. He was the third youngest of the six known children. He had two half-brothers named Joseph and James. He died due to a medical problem, Spanish Flu, at the age of 38 on November 28th, 1918 in Mile End Military Hospital.

- If you look at the army service record of William George Walker, my grandfather, you will see that my grandmother Elizabeth “adopted” James Henry Walker after his father died. Also if you look at the service record of Joseph Charles William H. you will see that he did live at 56 Eastbourne Road. This is the home of the Walkers. I know my father told me that two boys that lived with him emigrated to Australia. They must have been the two Hermitage boys
