    Thomas, son of Capt. Thomas Joell and Hester Dutarque, was born July
    21, 1764 and baptized on October 1st. Daughter Mary was born September
    5, 1765 and baptized in September of 1767, as recorded in the
    registers of St. Thomas and St. Denis Parishes. No other record or
    mention has been found for daughter Mary. The register notes the
    burial on December 22, 1771 of a John Joel (who may have been a
    stillborn or an infant death as no baptism date is recorded) and the
    burial of Hester Dutarque Joell on October 14, 1773.
    
    Thomas, son of Thomas Joell and Hester Dutarque, was named a Patriot
    of the American Revolution in recognition of his service in rendering
    material aid to the Continental Cause in supplying spars and lumber to
    the shipyards (according to the Journals of Commissioners of the Navy,
    Vol.1, pp.60, 148).
    
    The baptism of Thomas and Elizabeth Lee Joell's daughter, Elizabeth
    Maria, was recorded in the register of St. Phillip's Parish on October
    18, 1792; and of their son Thomas on Novermber 9, 1794. In 1800, both
    the church register and the newspaper record the deaths of son Beekman
    and his mother Elizabeth Joell. Two other children had been born in
    the 1790s: Ann Lee in 1795 and William in 1798. The 1800 census of
    Charleston County records the household of Thomas Lee as having 1 male
    10 and under [William], 1 male 26-45 [Thomas, himself], and 1 female
    10 and under [Ann Lee].
    
    The Gazette carried the following in its issue of Friday, January 14,
    1814: "Died, at St. Thomas' Parish, on Saturday the 19th of December
    in the 17th year of his age, Master William Lee Joel, of this
    city....But a few days previous to his death he was the hope of an
    aged Father, the fondest boast of an Affectionate Sister." [Thomas
    Joell was aged 50 in 1814.]
    
    No record has been found of either the death or will of Thomas Joell
    [son of Thomas & Hester Dutarque], although the above has been
    misconstrued as meaning that Thomas pre-decased his son William and
    some Joell genealogists show his death as 1814. An old ledger from a
    store in Laurens District lists a Thomas Jowell as a customer in 1811,
    and the 1810 census of Abbeville District lists a large household for
    a Thomas Jowell, but it is not known whether or not this Thomas Jowell
    is one and the same as Thomas Joell of Charleston. The 1820 census of
    Charleston District shows a Thomas Joell as head of household #109
    [full record of this enumeration has not been seen by this
    researcher]. Another mystery is the notation in Pierson's Bermuda of
    the marriage of an otherwise unidentified Capt. Thomas Joell to a Miss
    Ann Cox in Hamilton on April 30, 1812.

    "ELIZABETH LEE ... married Thomas Joel, Jr. Dec 25, 1791, Charleston,
    S. C.  He was born July 21, 1763 the son of Capt. Thomas Joel and
    Hester Dutarque of St. Thomas' Parish, Charleston, S. C.  The
    Dutarques were French Hugenots.  Thomas Joel, Jr. was considered a
    patriot of the American Revolution, having sold materials to the
    shipyards.  He died in December of 1814."
