    2. WILLIAM2 JOELL (RICHARD1) was born Bef. 1678 in probably Pembroke,
    Bermuda, and died Aft. March 15, 1713/14 in will, Pembroke, Bermuda.
    He married SUSANNA STAFFORD, daughter of WILLIAM STAFFORD and
    ELIZABETH MIDDLETON. She was born Abt. 1660 in Pembroke, Bermuda, and
    died Aft. July 31, 1741 in will, Devonshire, Bermuda.

    mariner, member of Assembly.
    
    16 May 1698. By the Gov: according to an act of Parliament
    ....personally appeared before me William JOELL, one of the owners and
    master of sloop called THE SUCCESS of 20 tons of Bermuda, was built in
    Bermuda, America, in 1697, and that said JOELL and Joseph HUTCHINS,
    both of said island, are at present owners and that no foreigner has
    any interest therein....signed: Joseph BLAKE. (Records, Secretary of
    the Province 1694-1705, p.127)
    
    1700: Charles Town: "...the governor threatened to seize the sloop of
    William JOELL of Bermuda under the claim that it was not registered
    within the proper time frame. Actually, JOELL was still entitled to
    register his vessel, but paid L80 to BLAKE in order to avoid
    prosecution." (South Carolina Historical Magazine 79:16)
    
    15 June 1700, William JOEL of Bermuda appoints Edward RANDOLPH, Esq.
    as his agent in Colony of South Carolina. Witness: Edward HUBBARD,
    Tho. FRITH, Tho. WALKER. (Records, Secretary of the Province 1695-1705
    p.236)
    
    William JOELL had lost use of a hand in skirmish with pirates. In
    1700, Capt FRITH captured despoiler of JOELL. (Wilkinson's Bermuda in
    the Old Empire)
    
    1703: BETTY OF BERMUDA, Plantation built 1697, 15 Tons, Thomas
    TRISTAN, master, William JOOLL, Thomas LAWSON, Owners (List of Ships
    Clearing Outwards in Lower District James River from April 23rd to
    Sept 25th)
    
    Captain JOELL was a member of the Bermuda Assembly. In 1707, he was
    tried and acquitted for illegally trading. His sloop, the ROSE (James
    ANGUISH, master), having loaded corn in VIrginia, was accosted off the
    Virginia Capes and directed to go to New York. Captain JOELL, part
    owner, directed ROSE to Bermuda instead. The council agreed that
    because of the perishable nature of the cargo (corn) and the season
    (hurricanes) it was impracticable to send the vessel to New York. The
    council also stressed JOELL's good character and peaceable nature.
    
    16 Dec 1714, Wm. JOELL purchased 550 acres in Elizabeth River Parish,
    Norfolk Co., Virginia, near mouth of Broad Creek & Horse Bridge Creek
    from William GODFREY. [This was the Tanner's Creek property.]
    
    15 March 1714. Will of William JOELL of Pembroke, mariner, leaves to
    wife Susannah mansion and his share of land purchased from Adrian EVE
    & Benj. WOOD, to mother Bridget store house during her life & then to
    William JOELL, to son Richard 350 acres Virginia land, and some
    Bermuda land to sons Thomas & John. The Will names children: WIlliam,
    Richard, Thomas, John, Stafford, Benjamin, Susannah, Elizabeth, &
    Solomon, and gives to each son with no land, a negro. Proved 15 March
    1715.
    
    He married Susannah STAFFORD. Died 1741 in Bermuda.
    
    She was the daughter of William & Elizabeth STAFFORD (death notice of
    William STAFFORD, 1711, Pembroke, Bermuda Archives, film 25). As
    William's widow, she married Samuel Sherlock [and is said to have left
    a will written in 1741].
