    Thomas Joell, St Thomas and St Dennis Parish. Son; Thomas, all residue
    of estate in this or any other part of the world. Niece; Rebecca Sarah
    Burch, now ort lately residing on the island of Bermuda; Susanna
    Albuoy now or lately residing on said island, sisters-in-law Mrs
    Martha Fogartie, wife of Stephen Fogartie. Executors; son, neighbor
    Nathan Tart. Witnesses; Richard Todd, James Fogartie, Brian Cope.

    JOELL/South Carolina
    
    By the eve of the American Revolution Charleston, South Carolina was
    one of North America's most populous cities, and is said to have been
    it's most cosmopolitan or European. Over 300 ships a year called at
    its port. Charleston's City Gazette, in its listing of ship arrivals
    between August 1760 and October 1762, noted 6 arrivals of the sloop
    Ready Money, Thomas Joell, master, from the ports of Antiqua, St.
    Kitts, St. Eustatius, Providence, and St. Christopher's. Thomas's
    grandfather, Captain William Joell called there in 1700, as related in
    the South Carolina Historical Magazine [79:16]: "...the governor
    threatened to seize the sloop of William Joell of Bermuda under the
    claim that it was not registered within the proper time frame.
    Actually, Joell was still entitled to register his vessel, but paid 80
    lbs. to Blake in order to avoid prosecution."
    
    On April 29, 1763, the Gazette announced the arrival of Capt. Thomas
    and his ship Esther from St. Martin's. The following month, May 22,
    1763, Captain Thomas Joell married Hester Dutarque [Huguenot Society
    of South Carolina, 67:60]. The dates of birth of Thomas and Hester are
    not known.

    The will of Sarah Joell (mother of Capt. Thomas), which was written in
    1777 and probated in 1787, bequeathed mourning rings to the children
    of her son Thomas, the bulk of the Joell estate having already been
    settled by her husband Thomas's will of October 1749. Bermuda deed
    records note the following on September 5, 1781:
    
    Indent bet. THOMAS JOELL of Pembroke, Bda. Gent late resident in South
    Carolina being only son of THOMAS JOELL late of S.C. mariner dec'd of
    one pt & ED DUNSCOMBE mariner & ED DUNSCOMBE, mariner of other pt. 1st
    sells to 2nd for L700 dwelling & 25 ac B.W. on lands bel to heirs of
    SAM. SALTUS dec'd N. on land in occ. of ROBT ROBINSON & JEREMIAH
    WHITNEY & MARY BECK; E on NATH MITCHELL & S. on Sea or Lane Harbor &
    the STAMERS Point. This same land was purchased from ADRIAN EVE &
    BENJ. WOOD by WM JOELL & by his last will March 15 1714 was left to
    his son WILLIAM & which by regular descent has become the absolute
    propery of sd. THOMAS. [a note by 1934 Joell researcher states that
    this was the "Olive Hill" property]
    
    Another entry concerning this same piece of property is dated Sept 4,
    1789:
    
    Property formerly belonging to WILLIAM JOELL 25 acres, who purchased
    it from ADAMAN [sic] EVE & BENJAMIN WOOD. B.W on land of SAM SALTUS,
    d[?] N. on land in occ of ROBERT ROBINSON, JEREMIAH WHITNEY & MARY
    BECK; E on land NATH. MITCHELL & S. on the sea or Lane Harbor & the
    point called "Stamer's Point".
    
    WILLIAM JOELL by will dated Mar 15 1714 gave the prop to his son
    WILLIAM & it is now the absolute propery of THOS JOELL of Pembroke but
    late resident of the Parish of St Thomas & St Denis in South Caroina
    he being the eldest & only son of THOS JOEL late of above Parish, S.
    C. decd & he sold it to ED. & WM DUNSCOMBE for L700.

    Captain Thomas Joell died on November 15, 1785, as noted in the South
    Carolina Gazette and Advertizer: "Died in St. Thomas Parish, Captain
    Thomas Joel of that place, much esteemed by all who knew him." His
    will, dated November 5, 1785 and probated August 18, 1790, leaves "all
    residue of estate in this or any other part of the world" to his son
    Thomas, and minor bequests to nieces Rebecca Sarah Burch and Susanna
    Aulbouy "now or lately residing on the island of Bermuda," and to
    sister in law Mrs. Martha [Dutarque] Forgartie, "wife of Captain
    Stephen Fogartie."
