Godfrey was born in 1575 in Eckington, Derbyshire, England.  Godfrey's father was William STANIFORTH and his mother was Joane MYCOCKE.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas STANIFORTH and Agnes (UNKNOWN).  He had five brothers and three sisters, named William, Henry, John, Thomas, Robert, Marjorie, Dorothy and Joan.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
