james was born in 1886 in Sale, Cheshire, England. James' father was James MARSLAND and his mother was Mary Alice Rogerson GRATRIX. His paternal grandparents were Richard MARSLAND and Ann RENSHAW. He had a brother and seven sisters, named Richard, Edith, Polly, Alice, Esther, Dorothy, Ethel and Annie. He was the second oldest of the nine children.
