Thomas' father was Thomas Marshall and his mother was Alison Robertson Kegan. His maternal grandparents were Hugh Keggans and Agnes Robertson. He had a brother and two sisters, named Malcolm, Ellen and Agnes. He was the youngest of the four children. He died at the age of 66 in 1968 in Stewarton.
