Richard's father was Henry Keegens and his mother was Elizabeth McSephany. His paternal grandparents were Hugh Keggans and Agnes Robertson. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Hugh, William, Henry, George, Richard, Thomas, Agnes and Mary. He was the youngest of the nine children. He died at the age of 50 in 1952 in St. Quivox.
