David's father was David Hay and his mother was Susanah McMurran. His maternal grandparents were David McMurran and Allison McClymont. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Jonathan, William, Alice, Agnes, Jeanie, Annie and Annie. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
