Alice's father was David Hay and her mother was Susanah McMurran. Her maternal grandparents were David McMurran and Allison McClymont. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, David, Jonathan, William, Agnes, Jeanie, Annie and Annie. She was the oldest of the nine children. She died at the age of 73 in 1946 in Kilmarnock.
