Thomas' father was David Hay and his mother was Susanah McMurran. His maternal grandparents were David McMurran and Allison McClymont. He had three brothers and five sisters, named David, Jonathan, William, Alice, Agnes, Jeanie, Annie and Annie. He was the third oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 24 in 1900 in Kilmarnock.
