Mary was born in 1844 in Petworth, Sussex and her baptism took place there on October 20th, 1844.1 2  Mary's father was James Whitcombe and her mother was Mary Ann.  Her paternal grandparents were George Whitcomb and Charlotte Warden. She had four brothers and a sister, named James, Alfred, Edwin, Ambrose and Emily.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
