Edwin was born in 1849 in Petworth, Sussex and his baptism took place there on August 12th, 1849.1 2  Edwin's father was James Whitcombe and his mother was Mary Ann.  His paternal grandparents were George Whitcomb and Charlotte Warden. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, Alfred, Ambrose, Mary and Emily.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
