James was born in 1814 in Petworth, Sussex and his baptism took place there on January 1st, 1815.1 2  James' father was George Whitcomb and his mother was Charlotte Warden.  His maternal grandparents were Wm Warden and Mary Spooner. He had three brothers and three sisters, named George, William, Charles, Mary, Charlotte and Ann.
