Ambrose was born in 1855 and his baptism took place on September 26th, 1855 in Petworth, Sussex.1  Ambrose's father was James Whitcombe and his mother was Mary Ann.  His paternal grandparents were George Whitcomb and Charlotte Warden. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, Alfred, Edwin, Mary and Emily.  He was the youngest of the six children.
