Alfred was born about 1842 in Petworth, Sussex and his baptism took place there on March 20th, 1842.1 2  Alfred's father was James Whitcombe and his mother was Mary Ann.  His paternal grandparents were George Whitcomb and Charlotte Warden. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, Edwin, Ambrose, Mary and Emily.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
