Nicolaas Petrus was born on September 5th, 1818 in Witteklip, Mosselbaai and his baptism took place on December 27th, 1818 in George.1   Nicolaas Petrus' father was Cornelis (Langetouw) Claasen and his mother was Johanna Isabella Rautenbach.  His paternal grandparents were Nicolaas Claasen and Martha Dorothea Pienaar. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Johan Andreas, Cornelis Johannes, Daniel Gerhardus, Margaretha Isabella, Maria Dorothea and Johanna.  He was the oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 59 on October 11th, 1877 in Langefontein, Mosselbaai.1
