Maria Dorothea was born on July 4th, 1823 and her baptism took place on December 7th, 1823 in Swellendam.1   Maria Dorothea's father was Cornelis (Langetouw) Claasen and her mother was Johanna Isabella Rautenbach.  Her paternal grandparents were Nicolaas Claasen and Martha Dorothea Pienaar. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Nicolaas Petrus, Johan Andreas, Cornelis Johannes, Daniel Gerhardus, Margaretha Isabella and Johanna.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
