Cornelis Johannes was born on October 5th, 1827 in Gouritsrivier, George and his baptism took place on February 24th, 1828 in George.1   Cornelis Johannes' father was Cornelis (Langetouw) Claasen and his mother was Johanna Isabella Rautenbach.  His paternal grandparents were Nicolaas Claasen and Martha Dorothea Pienaar. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Nicolaas Petrus, Johan Andreas, Daniel Gerhardus, Margaretha Isabella, Maria Dorothea and Johanna.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.
