Maryann was born in 1835 in Van Buren Co, TN.  Maryann's father was Joseph N. Simmons and her mother was Mary Elizabeth 'Betty' Lewis.  Her paternal grandparents were James Simmons and Stacy Ann Roberts. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Benjamin Lewis, Joseph Henry Knox, James D., George Washington, Andrew Jackson 'Jack', Mamie Elizabeth and Katherine.  She was the fourth youngest of the eight children. She had a half-sister named Francis M..
