James D. was born in 1837.  James D.'s father was Joseph N. Simmons and his mother was Mary Elizabeth 'Betty' Lewis.  His paternal grandparents were James Simmons and Stacy Ann Roberts. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Benjamin Lewis, Joseph Henry Knox, George Washington, Andrew Jackson 'Jack', Mamie Elizabeth, Katherine and Maryann.  He was the third youngest of the eight children. He had a half-sister named Francis M..
