John I. was born in 1866 in Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania.1 John I.'s father was Joseph Markle Means and his mother is Margaret Ingram. His paternal grandparents were John Means and Susannah Whitesell; his maternal grandparents are John Ingram and Sarah Ridpath. He had four brothers and a sister, named Cassius Whitesell, Lithgow Brown, William Alfred, Robert Markle and Ada. He is the second youngest of the six children.General Notes
