Maria Jane was born in 1864 in Texas.1 Maria Jane's father was William E. Johnston and her mother was Elizabeth Miles Allen. Her paternal grandparents were John L. Johnson and Eliza McGee; her maternal grandparents were Miles Norton Allen and Mary Penelope Dodson. She had three brothers and four sisters, named James Woodall, Leander, William Franklin, Francis May McGee, Alice Lizzie, Penelope Elizabeth and Eliza. She had a half-brother named William Franklin.
