Leander was born in 1865 in Texas.1 Leander's father was William E. Johnston and his mother was Elizabeth Miles Allen. His paternal grandparents were John L. Johnson and Eliza McGee; his maternal grandparents were Miles Norton Allen and Mary Penelope Dodson. He had two brothers and five sisters, named James Woodall, William Franklin, Francis May McGee, Maria Jane, Alice Lizzie, Penelope Elizabeth and Eliza.
