Her paternal grandparents were John L. Johnson and Eliza McGee; her maternal grandparents were Miles Norton Allen and Mary Penelope Dodson. She had three brothers and four sisters, named James Woodall, Leander, William Franklin, Maria Jane, Alice Lizzie, Penelope Elizabeth and Eliza. She had a half-brother named William Franklin.
